NIT courses are available to any student that meets our eligibility requirements. Potential students will be asked to complete an application. When the application is signed and returned to the Administration Office, the staff will discuss tuition and fees and potential funding sources that may be available.
For NIT driving courses which are 80 hours or more, students must obtain a (DOT) Department of Transportation physical, drug test, and a copy of their driving record from the (DMV) Department of Motor Vehicles.
NIT expects payment 14 days prior to the start of the 80+ hour driving and construction equipment courses, unless other arrangements have been made. There are no provisions for partial payment of fees. All other courses must be paid, in full, prior to the start of the course.
If a student requests a refund after tuition and fees have been paid, the refund policy will apply.
A $30 nonrefundable fee will be charged for all checks returned for non-sufficient funds. Before attending class, this fee and the amount of the check must be paid to NIT by money order, cashiers check or in cash.

Behind the wheel time will consist of four or six hour shifts. Driving time hours will be determined during class.

TARDINESS AND ABSENCES POLICY
Regular attendance is crucial to successful completion and personal development. Due to the intensity of the training, and the personal development taught in our school, all students must maintain regular class attendance. A full-time attendance policy pertains to the hazardous materials courses.
NIT, as well as the transportation industry as a whole, operates on a precise timetable. Unexcused, consistent tardiness or absences will result in dismissal.
Our policy pertaining to tardiness and absences is as follows:
2 week/90 hour or less Training Programs:
- Third day of absence will result in termination from courses two weeks or 90 hours in length.
- The third tardy either at the beginning of each day or returning from lunch or both will result in termination from NIT courses two weeks or 90 hours in length. It is not fair to disrupt the class for fellow students and will not be tolerated.
4 week/ over 160 hour Training Programs
- Fourth day of absence will result in termination from courses four weeks or longer.
- Fifth tardy, either at the beginning of each day or returning from lunch or both will result in termination from NIT courses. It is not fair to disrupt the class for fellow students and will not be tolerated.
Communication regarding attendance is an important element in fulfilling the requirements for successful completion of all courses. All absences are unexcused unless prior arrangements were made with the NIT training staff. Excused absences for range/street days are made up, if necessary, by adding driving time on a daily basis for the remainder of the course.
Students who have an illness during class, which prevents his/her attendance, may be subject to a refund in accordance with the enrollment contract. Additionally, the student may be rescheduled into another class, providing an opening exists. These two conditions will be considered only if the student can provide written documentation from an attending physician that justifies a continued absence. NIT reserves the right to further investigate any claims of illness. In the event the documentation is not received within three days of absence or the documentation does not satisfy NIT's administration, the student will be expelled.
STUDENT COMPLAINTS/GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES
Complaints by students may be addressed initially with the instructor. If a student feels his/her concerns have not been addressed or met in this way, he/she is encouraged to make an appointment with the program manager. Further appeal may be referred to the CEO. Final appeals may be made to the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Northern Industrial Training follows the guidelines set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This drug policy applies to every employee, instructor and student, who operates a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in interstate or intrastate commerce, and is subject to the commercial driver's license (CDL) requirements of Part 383 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
There are five situations where testing can be done to determine the presence of alcohol and/or drugs. NIT reserves the right to implement any of these procedures to its students, in compliance with FHWA standards and regulations.
- Pre-employment
- Post-accident
- Random
- Reasonable suspicion
- Return-to-duty and follow-up
While the Northern Industrial Training has strong prohibitions against the use and sale of intoxicating and/or illicit chemical substances, the staff is interested in helping students who have a problem in this area to receive treatment. Students are encouraged to consult with their instructor if they have a chemical dependency problem. |
