NIT Courses are available to all that meet the eligibility requirements. Potential students will be asked to complete an Application for Training when applying for programs 80 hours or longer. Once the Application is received by the Admissions office, a letter will be mailed to the applicant with specific program information and all pre-requisites for that program.
For programs less then 80 hours, students may register online and complete further paperwork the day of the class.
NIT requires, for programs 80 hours or longer, that all students be at least 18 years of age or older. For all Truck Driving (CDL) programs, the student must be 19 years of age or older. All other programs are based upon individual course requirements or open enrollment.
All programs 80 hours in length or longer require one or more of the following:
- State of Alaska Driver's License or State Issued ID Card
- DOT Drug Test
- Physical (DOT or Fitness Physical)
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
For all Truck Driving (CDL) programs 80 hours in length or longer the following is required:
- Must be a resident of the State of Alaska
- Must be 19 years of age or older
- State of Alaska Driver's License (minimum of one year)
- DOT Drug Test
- DOT (Medical Examiners Certificate) Physical
- Social Security Card
- Current Driver's History Report
Any one of the following lists of violations on a driving record could prevent a prospective applicant from enrolling in a driving program:
- Two traffic citations, 15 mph over the posted speed limit in a two-year period.
- One traffic citation, 15 mph over the posted speed limit with a suspension or revocation in a two-year period.
- A suspension and a revocation within a two-year period.
- A total of 10 points on your driving record in the last two years.
- Any driving under-the-influence conviction within the last two years.
- A total of three moving violations in the last two years.

NIT student requirements for the truck driving courses 80 hours or more are as follows:
- 19 years of age by graduation date
- High School Diploma or GED certificate is desirable
- Alaska Drivers License (valid license for at least one year)
- Clean Driving Record.
Any one of the following lists of violations on a driving record will prevent a prospective applicant from enrolling in a driving program:
- Two traffic citations, 15 mph over the posted speed limit in a two-year period.
- One traffic citation, 15 mph over the posted speed limit with a suspension or revocation in a two-year period.
- A suspension and a revocation within a two-year period.
- A total of 10 points on your driving record in the last two years.
- Any driving under-the-influence conviction within the last two years.
- A total of three moving violations in the last two years.
- Department of Transportation physical prior to class
- Drug Test within 10 days prior to class
- Finances - Full payment 14 days prior to class
- Schedule that will not interfere with class attendance/participation
